One Hundred Years, Five Views
For the Colombian government it is a cause for pride to present
FIVE COLOMBIAN VIEWS IN JAPAN, which is part of the cultural
exchange program that has been organized with the Japanese
people to celebrate 100 years of friendly relations.
The language of photography as an artistic expression has
had wide development in our country, as in the rest of the
world, thanks to the technological advances made by this discipline,
where talent of an industry, technicians, and artists
in Japan has played a central role.
With this exhibition we hope to offer the Japanese public
a panorama of views which sum up the different tendencies in
Colombian photography by means of the work five artists, in
which different tendencies are evident: the Colombian landscapes
of Sergio Bartelsman, the local festivals captured by
Fernando Cano, the scenes portrayed by Adriana Duque that
move from reality to fantasy, the overwhelming architectural
environments of doctor and photographer Luis Morales, and
the impressive geometric smoke images of Carlos Duque.
I wish to express my thanks for the collaboration offered
by the Colombian State Department, the Japanese Embassy in
Colombia, FOTOMUSEO, the National Photography Museum,
the latter acting as curator for our exhibition. We wish to
offer special recognition to the Art School of the Universidad
Politecnica of Tokyo for providing space in their Shaddai
Gallery for this brief but eloquent showing of Colombian photographic
art.
